Completion requirements

Module Introduction

In today's fast-paced and ever-evolving digital landscape, businesses are facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities that are reshaping the way they operate. The rise of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and cloud computing are transforming industries and creating new opportunities for growth, innovation, and competitiveness.

However, these advancements also pose significant challenges for organizations and leadership teams, who must navigate complex ethical, legal, and organizational considerations to fully leverage the potential of these technologies. Through this unit, we will examine the key drivers and implications of disruptive data applications and technologies, and explore the strategies and best practices that organizations and leaders can adopt to thrive in this rapidly changing landscape.

Examples of Disruptions on Organizations

This module lesson will cover a series of examples of disruption in various industries. As you complete the lesson, take careful notes and think beyond the content that has been provided.

  • Blockbuster vs. Netflix
  • The Healthcare Industry
  • The Agriculture Industry
  • Blockchain & Business

RESEARCH CONNECTIONS: Do any of the examples spark your interest? This might be a good topic for your capstone research!

Blockbuster vs. Netflix

Watch the following video:

Blockbuster was a traditional video rental chain that dominated the market for decades. However, the advent of online streaming and video-on-demand services such as Netflix threatened to disrupt Blockbuster's business model. Despite recognizing the threat, Blockbuster was slow to respond and was unable to successfully pivot to an online model. This led to the decline of the company and ultimately its bankruptcy.

On the other hand, Netflix began as a DVD-by-mail rental service and quickly adapted to the changing landscape of entertainment consumption by embracing the disruptive technology of online streaming. This allowed Netflix to rapidly gain market share and establish itself as a leader in the streaming industry. Netflix's success can be attributed to its ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and changing consumer behavior, as well as its willingness to take risks and embrace new business models.

Blockbuster failed to effectively manage disruptive innovation while Netflix successfully navigated and capitalized on the disruption. Blockbuster's inability to adapt to new technologies and changing consumer behavior ultimately led to its downfall, while Netflix's agility and forward-thinking allowed it to thrive in the face of disruption.

The Healthcare Industry

Disruptive technology has had a profound impact on the healthcare industry, bringing about new and innovative ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases. The healthcare industry has seen numerous technological advancements in recent years, transforming the way patients receive care and improving outcomes. Here are three examples of how disruptive technology has shaped the healthcare industry:

  1. Telemedicine: Telemedicine has revolutionized the way healthcare is delivered, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients can now consult with their healthcare providers from the comfort of their own homes using video conferencing and remote monitoring tools. This has increased access to care, reduced wait times, and improved patient satisfaction.
  2. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML): AI and ML are increasingly being used in healthcare to improve patient outcomes, reduce medical errors, and increase efficiency. For example, AI algorithms can analyze medical images to help diagnose diseases, such as cancer, with a high degree of accuracy.
  3. Wearable Devices: Wearable devices, such as fitness trackers and smartwatches, have become increasingly popular in recent years. These devices are equipped with sensors that collect data on various health metrics, such as heart rate, sleep patterns, and physical activity. This data can be used to improve patient health outcomes, monitor chronic conditions, and identify potential health risks.

How Big Data Could Transform Healthcare:

After reading about disruption in the healthcare industry and watching the video provided, write a 150-word reflection to capture your thoughts about the potential adverse outcomes that can or will occur once these technologies become more affordable and common to use. How will the industry need to adapt?
