Welcome to Module Two!
The impact of disruptive technology on individuals and society is important to recognize. It is important to be aware of the potential negative effects and to use technology in a balanced and responsible way.
In this module, you will explore the dynamic relationship between descriptive technology and society through a variety of short readings and videos. There are three short essay questions, true/false questions, and multiple choice. Please complete all module activities with honesty and integrity.
Impact on Social, Emotional, and Psychological Well-being
The impact of disruptive technology on social, emotional, and psychological well-being is complex and multifaceted. Some potential impacts include:
Social connectivity: Disruptive technologies such as the Internet and social media have made it easier for people to connect and communicate with one another, leading to increased social connectivity and the ability to maintain relationships over long distances.
Social isolation: However, excessive use of technology and social media can also lead to feelings of social isolation and loneliness, as well as negative effects on mental health such as anxiety and depression.
Emotional well-being: The use of technology can also affect emotional well-being, as social media and other digital platforms can create a sense of constant comparison and FOMO (fear of missing out) which can lead to negative emotions such as envy and dissatisfaction.
Psychological well-being: Constant access to technology can also affect our ability to focus, leading to attention deficits and impulsivity. It also can lead to addiction to technology and the need to be always connected, which can affect our ability to relax and disconnect from technology.
Privacy and security: Disruptive technologies also raise concerns about privacy and security, as personal data is often collected and shared by companies and organizations. This can lead to feelings of vulnerability and a loss of control over personal information
Book Summary: The Innovator's Dilemma
The Innovator's Dilemma, written by Clayton Christensen, is a book that examines how disruptive technologies can disrupt established companies and industries.
The book explains how successful companies, focused on improving their products and serving their most profitable customers, can overlook disruptive technologies that ultimately cause their downfall. Christensen introduces the concept of "disruptive technology," which refers to a new technology that initially serves a niche market and then eventually disrupts the existing market and displaces established market leaders. The book provides examples and case studies of companies that have been disrupted by disruptive technologies and offers insights and strategies for companies to identify and respond to disruptive technologies in order to survive and thrive.
In the book, Christensen presents 5 principles of disruptive innovation. Those principles are:
- Companies depend on customers and investors for resources.
- Small markets don't solve the growth needs of large companies.
- Markets that don't exist can't be analyzed.
- An organization's capabilities define its disabilities.
- Technology supply may not meet market demand.
Research Connections: Theory of Resource Dependence
The next few slides will explore some examples of disruptive technology. As you process the information, think about how Christensen's framework applies to the examples.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and learn like humans. AI systems are able to perform tasks such as perception, reasoning, problem-solving, decision-making, and understanding natural language.
Three examples of AI are:
- Self-driving cars, which use a combination of sensors, cameras, and machine learning algorithms to navigate roads and make decisions such as when to brake or change lanes.
- Virtual assistants, such as Amazon's Alexa or Apple's Siri, which use natural language processing to understand voice commands and perform tasks such as setting reminders or playing music.
- Image recognition software, which is used in applications such as security systems and photo tagging on social media. These systems use machine learning algorithms to identify objects, people and other features within digital images.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered a disruptive technology because it has the potential to fundamentally change the way that businesses and industries operate. It can automate tasks that were previously performed by humans, leading to increased efficiency and cost savings. Additionally, AI-powered systems can also perform tasks that humans cannot, such as analyzing vast amounts of data at a speed and scale that is beyond human capabilities.
One of the characteristics of disruptive technologies is that they often start by serving niche markets and then gradually disrupt the established market and displace established market leaders. This is seen in the field of AI, where initially it was only used by tech companies and research institutions, but now it is being adopted by various other industries such as finance, healthcare and manufacturing. AI is also disrupting traditional jobs and creating new opportunities.
Furthermore, AI can also disrupt the competitive landscape by creating new business models and enabling new entrants to enter the market. For example, an AI-powered chatbot can provide customer service 24/7, which may be more efficient and cost-effective than traditional human-based customer service. This could lead to disruption for companies that currently provide customer service.
Overall, AI is a disruptive technology because it has the potential to fundamentally change the way that businesses and industries operate, disrupt traditional jobs, and create new opportunities and change the competitive landscape.

How the Jetsons Predicted The Future
The Jetsons is a popular animated television series that first aired in the 1960s and depicted a futuristic world with advanced technology.
The show depicted a wide range of technological advancements, including robots, flying cars, and video conferencing, which were considered futuristic and disruptive technology at the time. The show's depiction of technology is considered a form of disruptive innovation, in the sense that it introduced ideas and concepts that were not yet available or prevalent in the real world at the time. The show's depiction of futuristic technology was intended to inspire and spark imagination, but it also served as a form of disruptive innovation in the sense that it introduced ideas and concepts that were not yet available or prevalent in the real world at the time.
In that sense, The Jetsons can be said to have contributed to the popularization of the concept of disruptive technology, by showcasing how advanced technology can change the way we live and work, creating new opportunities and changing the competitive landscape. The show also demonstrated how technology can make everyday life more convenient, efficient, and enjoyable.

IoT as Disruptive
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of physical devices, vehicles, buildings, and other objects embedded with sensors, software, and network connectivity, that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.
The IoT allows for the connection of everyday objects to the internet, enabling them to be controlled and monitored remotely and to send and receive data.
IoT is considered a disruptive technology for several reasons:
It has the potential to revolutionize the way that businesses and industries operate by providing access to vast amounts of data and enabling new business models. For example, IoT-enabled devices can be used to track inventory, monitor equipment, and optimize supply chains, leading to increased efficiency and cost savings.
IoT can also change the competitive landscape by enabling new entrants to enter the market. For example, small startups can develop IoT-enabled devices that can compete with established companies.
IoT can also disrupt traditional jobs, creating new opportunities and changing the way we live and work. For example, IoT-enabled devices can automate tasks that were previously performed by humans, leading to increased efficiency and cost savings.
IoT also has the ability to change the way we interact with the world around us by providing new ways to monitor and control devices and environments, leading to new forms of convenience, efficiency, and safety.
